Sedation dentistry allows patients to receive more involved procedures without experiencing any discomfort or pain during treatment. At Family Dental Group, we use sedation in many of our treatments to give patients the best dental experience and results possible. We welcome residents of Laguna Hills.

WHAT IS SEDATION DENTISTRY?

Sedation dentistry is the practice of using anesthetics or other substances to sedate patients during treatment, ensuring that they have the most comfortable experience possible. This allows oral surgeons to perform tooth extractions and more without the patient being susceptible to the pain that would be experienced without sedation. Sedation can be applied by injection, inhalation, or by being consumed orally.

INHALED MINIMAL SEDATION (LAUGHING GAS)

Laughing gas is the more well-known name of nitrous oxide, which is a safe, mild sedative that is inhaled prior to treatment. It is widely considered one of the safest methods of sedation because it works quickly and is reversible. Although laughing gas does not put you to sleep, it should cause you to feel relaxed and comfortable during treatment. The effects of laughing gas typically fade within a few minutes of removing the mask.

ORAL SEDATION

Depending on the total dose given, oral sedation can range from minimal to moderate. For minimal sedation, you take a pill about an hour before the procedure. The pill will make you drowsy, but you’ll still be awake. A larger dose may be given to produce moderate sedation. Some people become groggy enough from moderate oral sedation to actually fall asleep during the procedure. However, they can usually be awakened with a gentle shake.

IV MODERATE SEDATION

You receive the sedative drug through a vein, so it goes to work more quickly. This method allows the dentist to continually adjust the level of sedation.

DEEP SEDATION AND GENERAL ANESTHESIA

You will get medications that will make you either almost unconscious or totally unconscious during the procedure. While you are under general anesthesia, you cannot easily be awakened until the effects of the anesthesia wear off or are reversed with medication.

If you are going to the dentist for anything other than a regular cleaning, your treatment may involve some form of sedation. Family Dental Group prioritizes the safety and comfort of its patients, and uses only the safest and most effective forms of sedation. We proudly serve patients in the Laguna Hills.
